Vaikom is the capital of Vaikom Taluk, located in the northwest of the Kottayam district in the Indian state of Kerala. The town is also known for its role in India’s autonomy development, as it was the site of Vaikom Satyagraha, a social equality development that aimed to enshrine development opportunities for all sections of society in the streets of the people, resulting in the well-known Shiva shrine that was established here.
The town of Vaikom is located at the north-western end of Kottayam, near the Ernakulam region. Vaikom is the oldest community in the Kottayam region and one of the oldest in South India. Vaikom is also close to the well-known tourist destination of Kumarakom. Vaikom was once considered part of a kingdom called Venmalanadu. When Venmalanadu was divided into Vadakkumkoor and Thekkumkoor, it became part of the Vadakkumkoor tradition.
