Tour of the monasteries

The magnificent land of Ladakh is dotted with ancient and wonderful monasteries stretching from Lamayuru in the west to Diskit in the north and Hemis in the south. The glorious land of Ladakh is a hub of various monasteries like Shey, Thiksey, Stok, Stakna, Matho and Hemis. No one disturbs you, whether you are meditating or just sitting idle. The sight of the priests or the students walking around in dark purple Tibetan clothes is very soothing.

The view from Spituk Gompa is simply mesmerizing. The old Basgo Monastery lies in the middle of a beautiful hilly landscape. Likir Monastery is large and rich. The oldest, Alchi, is known for its wooden architecture and excavated historical temples. Samstanling Monastery and Diskit Monastery are must-visit attractions when in the beautiful Nubra Valley. There are many more monasteries on the way to Lake Pangong – the most famous are Shey Monastery, Thiksey for its hillside architecture, and the largest of them all, the magnificent Hemis Monastery, Likir for its huge statue of Maitreyafuture Buddha or Hemis for its annual festival… so pack your bags and take a tour on this unforgettable route!
