Pahalgam is a tourist resort in the state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is a prominent holiday destination and hill station. Pahalgam is managed by the Pahalgam Development Authority, headed by a Chief Executive Officer who serves as the Chairman of the Neighbourhood Committee. The important species are Cedrus deodara, Pinus griffithii, Abies pindrow, Aesculus indica and so on. The significant shrubs are Indigofera heterantha, Viburnum spp, Sorbaria tomentosa and so on. The ground cover is extremely rich and dicot herbs dominate: Rumex patientia, Primula spp, Anemone spp, etc.
There are numerous rare, endangered and secure species. The major species are Hangul, Musk Deer, Serow, Black Bear, Leopard, Rhesus Monkey, Dim Langur, Himalayan Mouse Rabbit and so on. Wild bears still roam through a large part of the area and nearby villagers are constantly on guard against them.
