Mundakayam is a town in the Kanjirappally taluk in Kottayam district in Kerala. Mundakayam is the entrance to the hill ranges of southern Kerala and lies on the edge of the Kottayam and Idukki regions. The nearest town, Kanjirappally, is 14 km (8.7 miles) from Mundakayam. Mundakayam has elastic lands and lots of greenery. The river Manimala flows through Mundakayam. Mundakayam is 48 km east of the main railway station of Kottayam and 148 km from the state capital, Thiruvananthapuram. The name Mundakayam is said to derive from the Mundi cranes that used to be seen on the banks of the Manimala River.
