Jama Masjid is one of the most prominent and historic mosques located in the heart of Srinagar city, in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir. It is also known as Masjid-i-Jahan Numa, which means “the mosque that shows the world” in Urdu language. The mosque was built in 1394 AD by Sultan Sikander Shah, the ruler of the Shah Miri dynasty, and has undergone several renovations and additions since then. The mosque is made of brick and wood and is a fine example of Indo-Saracenic architecture.
The mosque has a spacious courtyard with a beautiful fountain in the center. The prayer hall is supported by 370 wooden pillars, and the walls are decorated with intricate calligraphy and Quranic verses. The mosque also has a beautiful pulpit made of walnut wood, which is said to be the largest in Kashmir.
Jama Masjid is one of the largest mosques in the region and can accommodate thousands of worshippers at a time. It is also a popular tourist destination in Srinagar and is open to visitors of all faiths. However, visitors are required to dress modestly and remove their shoes before entering the mosque.
